Mr B's review

I’ve always been a big fan of Elliot. I loved him in Juno and Whip It, both coming-of-age tales about the trials of growing up and the joy of  finding out who you are – so I was super excited to pick up his memoir Pageboy, in which he gets to tell his own coming-of-age story, finally on his own terms.

These slice-of-life chapters detail episodes from throughout his life, from growing up in small-town Canada to doing shrooms with Michael Cera on the set of Juno, from being terrified to come out as a queer woman in an intensely homophobic Hollywood, to joyfully owning his gender identity and proudly coming out as a trans man. Powerful and moving, informative and inspirational, this non-linear narrative sees Elliot looking back on his past to piece together a sense of self. His journey from shame to self-acceptance to hard-won happiness had me in tears one page and laughing the next – I can’t recommend this enough.  – Liv

Before the world premiere of Juno Elliot Page was on the edge of self-discovery. But with Juno’s massive success and his dreams coming true, Elliot found himself trapped by the spotlight and the pressure to perform was suffocating him. Until enough was enough. From chasing down secret love affairs to battling body image and working through his difficult childhood, Pageboy is a beautiful, intimate book about searching for ourselves and our place in the world.

‘An emotional read, delivered in image-drenched prose.’ Washington Post
‘The emergence of our true selves is all of our life’s work. Pageboy helps chart the course.’ Jamie Lee Curtis
‘Pageboy is like listening to a friend… Now is an excellent time to read this humanizing and well-written memoir.’ Associated Press

Publisher Review

It doesn’t feel like the smoothed-over result of cautious editing, “as told to” anyone but Page himself. Such rawness, as a document of his life story, only makes it all the more singular. * Daily Telegraph * Brutally honest … Powerful. * New York Times Book Review * Vivid… Moving… Juicy * NPR * At its heart [Pageboy] is the story of his transitioning…. He writes, rather beautifully, about gender dysphoria, top surgery and finally finding himself. But the book is so much more than a tale of transition. Pageboy is a modern-day Hollywood Babylon, written by a sensitive soul. * Guardian * Page’s compassion-inducing account feels vital … Heartfelt and courageous in its honesty. * i Newspaper *
